The aim of the event is to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge required to achieve the NRW objective of increasing the diversity of tree species in NRW managed woodlands, in accordance with NRW policies and UK best practise. Using site-based examples.
Objectives
At the end of the course, the participants should have an understanding of:
Why is species diversity important to NRW;
The different site factors influencing species choice;
How to interpret the forest resource plan indicative forest types, linking this to the site type;
The site requirements of different species to enable selection of a suitable species;
How to plan species diversity at a coupe level;
The role of open ground;
When to use natural regeneration;
Mixtures;
The features of NRW stock maps;
The potential of Forest Development Types.

Other Information
The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment. The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.
Lunch is not provided please bring a packed lunch.
