Overview

For West South West and West Mid South Staff Only. Meeting at Rhys Pritchard Memorial Hall.

The aim of the event is to provide participants with the fundamental knowledge required to understand the ecological quality of Ancient Woodland Sites, (including Plantations on Ancient Woodland sites). Plan the interventions and manage subsequent forest operations, in accordance with NRW policies and UK best practise. Understand how silviculture can deliver long term conservation outcomes. Using site-based examples.

All participants must have attended the NRW webinar on managing Ancient Woodland Sites before attending this seminar.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the participants should have an understanding of:

  3. What do we mean by PAWS restoration, how long might restoration take and what does a restored woodland look like;

  4. The silviculture of Ancient Woodlands;

  5. The site issues to consider when planning forest operations;

  6. The management required to maintain and improve the woodland habitat condition and resilience;

  7. The impact of tree diseases on the silviculture of AWS;

  8. The role of establishment in the management of AWS.

Other Information

  • The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment. The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.

  • Lunch is not provided please bring a packed lunch.
