Mechanised Harvesting for Supervisors and Managers (Harvester Forwarder)

This course is for Forestry Works Managers, Site Supervisors, Team Leaders, and Managers involved in mechanised harvesting operations. It aims to equip participants with knowledge to oversee these operations safely, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain high operational and environmental standards. Additionally, the course promotes understanding of safe versus unsafe practices and helps participants identify and mitigate hazardous situations.

Objectives

At the end of the course the participant will have an understanding of:

  • Their role as a supervisor and/or manager of mechanised harvesting operations;

  • Requirements for good site preparation and contract specifications, including health and safety, pollution planning, public safety and environmental requirements;

  • Good forwarder and harvester operator competencies, safe and unsafe practices;

  • Mechanised harvesting systems;

  • Troubleshooting bad practices, learning from issues, identification of alternative approaches;

  • The identification of good and bad environmental practices.

  • Forestry contractors wishing to understand their responsibilities on site

  • The course is designed for participants who are involved (or will be involved) in the management of contract or standing sales harvesting operations using harvester and forwarder.

  • It is recommended that participants have a good understanding of their role as contract manager within the workplace, i.e. Supervisor, Manager, Forestry Works Manager, etc.

  • It is strongly suggested that the participants have attended the (Forest) Works Manager Awareness Course before attending this event. .

Lead Instructor

Michael Crutchley

Michael Crutchley is an accredited NPTC, LANTRA, FISA Assessor and Trainer plus an experienced Forestry Contractor with over 20 year’s experience working in the Forest Industry. 

Michael provides Training and Assessment for Chainsaw, Forestry Machines, Ground based Arboriculture plus site and skills management including Refresher Training, Workshop and Toolbox Talks for Contractors. He specialises in Forest Machine Operations, his experience as a contractor combined with his Assessor / Training knowledge ensures Michael provides services based on the industry’s current best practice guidance.

Over the years he has worked with leading forestry organisations across Wales and the UK including NRW, National Trust, Forestry England, FISA, and the Woodland Trust. Plus, many forestry contractors and harvesting companies such as Tilhill, and Euroforest. 

Mike is now developing his skills and business further, by applying his considerable knowledge to supporting managers and supervisors in their roles managing harvesting operations through training events.

Other Information

  • The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment.

  • The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.
