Institute of Chartered Foresters : Environmental Regulations – Tree Health (Pests and Diseases, A Welsh Perspective)

The Institute of Chartered Foresters and Focus on Forestry First have teamed up to bring foresters living and working in Wales a one-day workshop that focuses on tree health and pests and diseases from a Welsh perspective.


Objectives

  • The aim of this session is to provide an introduction to key pests affecting Wales both now and the future and it will explain the roles of the different bodies within Wales.

Agenda

  • Introduction to Natural Resources Wales Tree Health team

  • Overview of the duties of Welsh Government and the Animal and Plant Health Agency

  • Explain how Phytophthora ramorum is affecting Wales and NRW’s response as regulators and land managers

  • Summary of other key pests such as Oak Processionary Moth, Xylella f., Ips t ypographus

  • What you can do to reduce the risks

Speakers

Andrew Wright is the Team Leader for the Forest Regulations and Tree Health Team at NRW. He started his forestry career in the early 1990’s with Forestry Commission’s Survey branch in Perth. Following a break to complete a BSc (Hons) in Forestry, he worked for Tilhill Forestry in the Scottish borders and NE Scotland. He returned to Forestry Commission in 2002 as a Woodland Officer in South Wales and for the next 13 years had a number of roles within Forest Regulations and Grant Team, eventually coming the team leader. In 2015, Andrew took over the management of a small team delivering the Tree Health functions on behalf of Welsh Government. Focussing primarily on Phytophthora ramorum. In July 2019, Andrew became the Team leader for a combined Tree Health and Forestry Regulations bring together the 2 areas of his work over the past 18 years.

The Forest Regulations and Tree Health Team comprises of 11 people and is responsible for surveillance of regulated pests and disease on behalf of Welsh Government. We issue Statutory Notices for regulated Organisms and ensuring compliance subsequent compliance. The team also investigated offences under Forestry Regulations such as illegal felling or non-compliance and provides NRW with technical advice on Felling Licence Applications.
