Ground Preparation for Managers and Supervisors
Objectives
At the end of the course, the participants should have an understanding of:
The planning and organising of ground preparation and planting, including managing the land-bank, data management, and record keeping;
The relevance of site factors including soil type to the choice of successful ground preparation;
Environmental considerations for ground preparation and planting, including water management;
Purpose of ground preparation and the types of ground preparation;
Selecting the right type of ground preparation for the site. Linking site factors to ground preparation;
Safe management of ground preparation contracts;
Spacing and stocking density, including stocking density assessment;
Plant handling and planting.

Chris Jones
Chris has nearly 40 years of forestry and woodland management experience, including 35 years in Wales. He began with the Forestry Commission in S E Wales, managing harvesting and restocking. Later, at Forest Research, he developed projects to support the forestry sector in Wales. Chris led field teams and served as a liaison between Forest Research and FC Wales, transferring valuable information.
At Forest Research, he collaborated with specialists on silviculture, expanding his knowledge in environmental elements and tree physiology for sustainable forest management. He provided technical input at various FC and Institute of Chartered Foresters events, covering topics like species diversity, ground preparation, and silvicultural systems.
Chris now advises private foresters and forest management businesses, offering training on matching ground preparation and species to sites. He is the go-to forester in Wales for issues related to tree establishment, species choice, and silvicultural techniques.
Other Information
The course will include visiting site in a forestry and woodland environment.
The ground will be uneven so there will be a need to wear PPE suitable for outdoor visits appropriate to the conditions and weather.
