This course aims to provide a baseline for breeding bird surveys and checks on forestry sites and in particular birds specially protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
It will cover the relevant legislation and its interpretation and definitions; how this translates into practice, site inspections and approaches; a review of species and habitats that are commonly encountered; understanding of breeding cycles and seasonal timing; what constitutes disturbance and Schedule 1 Species.
In particular:
Protection afforded to all species of birds during breeding season - Specially Protected Birds found in UK Forestry/Woodland
Areas in the UK certain Specially Protected Birds could be found - The Law and Protected Birds
Identification /Signs of Use
What to do if a specially protected bird species is suspected
Disturbance and exclusion zones
Felling Licences & Protected Birds
We will focus on birds that are likely to be specially protected and potentially found within areas of Forestry operations, such as:
Hobby, Goshawk, White tailed sea eagle, Woodlark, Red kite, Osprey, Honey buzzard, Crossbills, Birds that may be found near to these areas or occasionally within Forestry areas such as Peregrine, and also covers species where forestry areas are considered significant and are regularly encountered such as nightjar, long eared owl, raven, as well as other bird species that breed in woodlands, such as Sylvia and Phylloscopus warblers, tits, woodpeckers, owls.
Objectives
Raise awareness of the legislative framework and the challenges faced by the forestry sector.
Increase awareness among delegates of how species may be using woodland environments.
Enable delegates to identify basic field signs/habitat indicators indicative of the possible presence of various species within woodland ecosystems.
Programme
This will be an partially indoor and partially field based external course.
If you wish to bring along any examples of schemes completed or in process, then guidance can be discussed, if time allows.
The course will deal with legalities and procedures/processes for undertaking bird surveys in different scenarios.

Dr. Stefan Bodnar MCIEEM
Dr. Stefan Bodnar is a distinguished ecologist with over 35 years of expertise in avian surveys, specialising in a wide range of protected bird species. A respected authority in his field, Dr. Bodnar holds an "S" permit as a BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) ringer with a prestigious trainer’s endorsement and multiple Schedule 1 licenses, allowing him to work with some of the most sensitive and protected birds in the UK.
Since 2010, Dr. Bodnar has been instrumental in educating the next generation of ornithologists through his well-regarded courses on protected bird species. His dedication to the field is further evidenced by his continuous membership with the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) since 2007, where he is recognised as a full member.
Dr. Bodnar’s extensive knowledge and commitment to avian conservation and education make him a leading figure in the ecological community.
