The Institute of Chartered Foresters - Introduction to Soil Identification for Foresters (Webinar)

The course is designed to be suitable for any forestry professional whose decisions depend on knowledge of soil.

Please note that the course is designed for the forestry rather than the arboricultural sector.  It will avoid jargon – the main purpose is to demystify the management of forest soils for practitioners.

Participants will receive handouts of presentations, further information and further reading (mostly online), UK Forestry Standard soil requirements and a list of Forest Research publications on soil management.

Objectives:

The objectives for this online workshop are to enable course members to:

  • understand the importance of soil management in sustainable forestry;

  • understand the building blocks of soil characterisation and forest soil classification;

  • learn how to approach soil investigation and identification in the forest or field, drawing upon published online sources on information, and conducting new observations;

  • understand the principles behind the Forestry Commission Ecological Site Classification (ESC) System, the soil inputs required and how to predict tree species suitability, taking climate change into account.

Who should attend?

Foresters living or working in Wales.
