Introduction to Continuous Cover Forestry For Operators (4D-ICCF)

  • Dolaucothi Arms Hotel (Llanwrda) Pumsaint, Llanwrda SA19 8UW (map)

The course will start with a short indoor session in Pumsaint at the Dolaucothi Arms Hotel followed by a forest visit at Bryn Arau Duon.

Bryn Arau Duon is a 680ha commercial plantation that has been under transformation to CCF for 21 years. It provides a demonstration of the transformation process in upland spruce in Wales. The transition from first and second thinning using Graduated Density Thinning and selection criteria through to target dimension felling is shown in stands at different stages of transformation.

The course will provide a basic introduction to the principles of CCF and of the application of those principles from first thinning to selective felling and to structural development. The stages of transformation will be illustrated by stand development types and by identifying the different components of an irregular stand. Practical demonstrations be used to illustrate the process of transformation and the simple steps required to start transforming forests.

Instructor:

The course will be led by Phil Morgan FICFor, one of the leading practitioners of CCF.
