Charcoal Burning is an ancient skill, this workshop will provide you with an opportunity to observe & participate in the process, from laying & filling the kiln, to the burn & grading of the product.

Objectives

  • Types & History of Kilns

  • Timber types & Results

  • Loading & Lighting

  • Stages of the burn

  • Controlling the burn

  • Finished product (Biochar, cooking & working)

Candidates will be part of the whole process including:

  • Sourcing and preparing the material to burn

  • Ground prep and site choice for the burn

  • Kiln set up

  • Loading the kiln

  • Lighting and controlling burn

  • Shutting down the burn

  • Sorting and grading of the final produce
