The aim of the course is to provide delegates with a thorough grounding in the safe working practices pertaining to the splicing of wire ropes.
By the end of the course, they will be able to carry out the splicing skill involved safely, successfully and in accordance with accepted standards and codes of practice.
Objectives
Soft Rope Slice – Joining the two ends of a 3 core polypropylene rope to form a skidding choker.
Flemish Eye – Splitting the end of a wire rope and reforming to create a loop with a minimum of 3 tucks of the right quality.
Short & Long Splice – Joining 2 ends of rope end onto form an invisible join, then complete the right number of tucks in the right place.
Alternative Splicing Techniques – Showing other ways of joining ropes such as the ‘forest splice’.
Uses and limits of splices – The advantages and disadvantages of the different splices and where best to use them.
Legal Status of Splicing – How splicing works with regard to PUWER & LOLER.

Alun Rhys Jones
Alun R Jones is a well established Forestry Contractor based in north Wales, he has experience in all levels of forestry contracting using machines as well as motor manual processing. Alun is part of the Welsh Policy Committee for the Forestry Contractors Association as well as a Lantra Verifier, and a specialised forestry instructor and City & Guilds Assessor.
Alun is well respected within the forest industry and forestry training industry in Wales and the wider UK having been a staple name with his peers wince the mid 90s. Alun is also an original member of the Focus on Forestry First Advisory Group and has been a Director of the company since 2015.
