An Introduction to Tree Identification

Aim:

To develop tree identification skills for a range of broadleaf and coniferous trees.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, each trainee should be able to

  • Comment on identifying features of trees.

  • Identify trees using a key and an identification book

  • Recognise similarities in trees of the same genus. 

  • Recognise a range of tree species from leaf and twig samples

  • Recognise a range of tree species in the field.

  • Understand some of the habitats that different species occupy

  • Understand some of the uses of different tree species as timber, landscape, wildlife habitat or amenity

This event will have a combination of classroom & outdoor learning; Please ensure you have suitable clothing on site

  • Boots with good grip soles, fit for poor terrain.

  • Warm, non-snag clothing including gloves, hat etc.

  • Wet weather clothing
