These sessions combine online learning with a practical day in a woodland learning inventory techniques. It is aimed at woodland owners or managers who are looking to diversify their income streams and explore ways to make sustainable use of the non-timber forest products in their woods.
Course Description
What's in your wood besides timber? Are there any wild resources in the woods which could be managed to provide an income? How can you determine what opportunities might be present? What information do you need to plan a sustainable management and harvesting regime? What are the potential marketing opportunities? This three-day course provides the basic skills to undertake a review of potential products in a woodland and their uses, it outlines the steps involved in setting up a sustainable harvesting and management regime for wild products in a woodland.

16th March, 10:00 - 13:00. Introduction to forest inventory (Online)
This online class will cover : Products in the woods, Principles of woodland inventory, Laying out and enumerating plots, Plot layout and enumeration.
17th March, 10:00 - 16:00. Field class.
This will be a day in the woods looking for products, practical aspects of inventory and developing field inventory skills.
We are prepared to host the class at up to two venues to be chosen to be within comfortable travel distance from students. Provisional venues are Llyn Parc Mawr, Newborough and Denmark Farm, Lampeter.
You will need sturdy boots/wellies, warm clothes and raincoats as we’ll be outside. Bring a flask and a packed lunch. All other equipment will be provided.
18th March, 11:00 - 15:00 - Data handling and analysis (Online)
This online class will cover : Data analysis, Use of pivot table for data analysis, Introduction to mapping, Sources of product information, Next steps for planning sustainable harvesting.
Speakers
Bryan Dickinson – providing expertise in wildlife survey, GIS and database management. BSc, MPhil in zoology and ungulate ecology with 30 years’ experience in wildlife and woodland surveys.
Jenny Wong – providing expertise in forestry and non-timber forest product development. BSc, MSc, PhD in environmental science and forestry with 30 years’ experience in forest inventory, community forestry and non-timber forest products.
