Planning and delivering activities in Community Woodlands – an overview

Course Description

This three hour online condensed course will provide a basic overview of the important aspects to consider when managing community woodlands, specifically events, activities, volunteer or training days in woodlands.  It will enable groups / landowners to plan and deliver management activities in woodlands safely and effectively with communities and volunteers. The course assumes no prior knowledge of woodland activities or woodland management and will highlight further courses and learning that you can undertake.

Delivered online with case study examples, interactive exercises and facilitated to capture personal experiences. The modules the course covers in overview;

  • Permissions and Insurance; Why are they needed, what are they and management options.

  • Site management and responsibilities; ID of hazards, site inspections, tree safety, access issues.

  • Working with volunteers and engaging your community

  • Biodiversity and habitat management; protected sites and species, encouraging biodiversity

  • Facilities and tool maintenance – keeping everything ship shape.

The full course would normally run across three days with one practical day in a woodland setting.

10:15- 10:30   – Introductions

10:30 – 11:00 – Overview of modules 1&4 – permissions and insurance, biodiversity and habitat management

11:15 – 12:00 – Overview of modules 2&5 – site management and responsibilities, facilities maintenance

12:15 – 13:00 – Overview of module 3 – working with volunteers and engaging communities

Speakers

Sasha Ufnowska  - 18 years experience working with volunteer community groups including facilitation and community consultation; the past six years with LlyG . She is an experienced woodland manager and is able to translate information on practical technique as well as theoretical aspects to an audience clearly and effectively.

Hywel Dodd – experienced in practical woodland management spanning 15 years including access and infrastructure, habitat/biodiversity improvements, INNS, tree care . Hywel has run many practical conservation volunteer groups and has worked with schools, community groups and families delivering woodland/habitat/species workshops.

Elizabeth Mutch - has 20 + years’ experience of community development, consultation, and engagement, the last six with LlyG.  She is an experienced facilitator developing and delivering workshops and events both on-line and in person and has created resources from national organisations to local groups.  She has trained in Asset Based Community Development, Design by Consensus (Placemaking), is a Community Practitioners member and is workings towards accreditation in Co-Production (with CoProNet Cymru). 

Who should attend?

Existing Community Woodland Groups (CWGs), those just starting out, interested in forming a CWG or volunteering in woodlands, as well as landowners who wish to work with Communities in their woodlands.
